Can you please tell us the nature of the computer crash? Did it hang-up, stuck on a BSOD, restarted automatically?

You can check your Event Logs to see if you can get additional data about the crash. Moreover, did the system overheat?

Automatic restart.

No Event Log. Event Viewer Service is set for automatic start, but is not running. Attempt to manually start it results in "Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider."

No overheat. CPU is steady at 65-71C; GPU at 59-61C.

You may have been rather lucky --- or not..

Your "before the crash" log looks something like this:

06:39:07:WU00:FS00:0x17:Completed 2500000 out of 2500000 steps (100%)
...
06:39:39:WU02:FS01:0x17:Folding@home Core Shutdown: FINISHED_UNIT
06:39:40:WU02:FS01:FahCore returned: FINISHED_UNIT (100 = 0x64)
06:39:40:WU02:FS01:Sending unit results: id:02 state:SEND error:NO_ERROR project:xxx run:xxx clone:xxx gen:xxx core:0x17 unit:xxx
06:39:40:WU02:FS01:Uploading xxx

Part of the period between Completed 100% and FINISHED_UNIT (100 = 0x64) though it's not clear how much of that period is exposed to danger. If you crash during the dangerous portion, you won't be able to upload the results. Fortunately it uploaded at 03:26:13. Unfortunately it has not received credit yet and it has been a while. If I had to guess, I'd say that the results file that was uploaded was missing some important data -- but I hope I'm wrong.

Everything else is working just fine. An SMP WU completed successfully prior to that, and after the FAH and CCC upgrades.

I was able to fix the Event Log after a search of the MS Support site. Has to do with permissions in C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RTBackup -- needs full permissions for System (delete old folder, reboot, reset permissions if required).

As I read the FAH log, the crash occurred just as the GPU WU finished -- right after the FINISHED_UNIT event. The new WU download had completed, but it is certainly possible that the entire results file from the completed unit had not been saved.

The question is whether it is a problem with this GPU/CCC combination, a random fluke, or something else.

I set the current GPU WU to "Finish" so I will not get a new one. If this one crashes at the same point, I will probably delete the GPU slot again, and just continue with the SMP slot. That has been running since I built the machine, and often runs 2+ week unattended...

Update: 2nd GPU WU finished normally. Hopefully the failure of the first was either a fluke or specific WU related.

Just to ensure everything relevant is up to date, I updated my BIOS, and RST (RAID) and Intel VGA drivers. I also installed the Virtu driver, which I hadn't done before. It may be my imagination, but scrolling seems much smoother now. I noticed a bit of stutter in web page scrolling after starting the GPU slot, but it's almost unnoticeable now. The gfx subscore of the Windows Experience Index also went from 6.9/6.9 to 7.4/7.4 with Virtu enabled.

The newest Betas are causing minor issues when Alt-Tabbing sometimes while HDMIed to the HDTV. Nothing serious though, the folding boost is more than worth it.

Update: After 5 days of GPU Folding, it appears all is going well. Output on the machine is up ~10K PPD, which correlates well to the current reported 12K PPD for the GPU slot.

Dunno if I will take the plunge and try the 14.x Cat drivers; things are running smoothly already...
