How to turn on both cores?

Post by RMouse »

Overnight my computer seems to have flipped out. It was folding as normal, both cores working on one WU. This morning I found my computer in stand by mode, and when I turned it back on, my Folding at home client seems to have been wiped clean. My WU was gone, after working on it for 5 days, :(, my passkey gone, my user name gone.

I reset everything, and got a new WU, but now i find that only one core is active. I dont fold with my GPU since that slows my folding, not speeds it up.

How to tell Folding at home to devote all cores to one WU?

Thanks,
7im

You didn't post any computer specs or a fah config, so we can only begin to guess. 2 cores? 20 cores?

Set the power slide to full is the first thing to do. There may be more...

Can you please navigate to the logs folder and see if you can retrieve the previous logs? By default, it should be in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\logs. Also, were there any errors reported by the OS?

Sorry, not at home now so cannot provide more details. I am folding on a dell laptop with a core2duo processor. I did slide the power slider all the way to the right. NO change, only folding with one core.

I will post more after I return home after work.

I can try the logs later when I am home. I know of no error messages from the OS.

If this is the first work unit on this machine, it will default to a single core. Next WU will use both.

Interesting. I have been folding for almost 2 years with this computer, but it has recently been modified by my company since I bought the computer and now i fold under a different "account" (windows XP). Perhaps to the folding client this is now a "new" computer.

I wish i had a really fast WU so that I could see what the next one will be like. Most WU's take me several days to finish.

Old computer and new install of fah software is the same thing as a new computer.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. The next WU started folding with both cores going. Not sure what happened to my machine to wipe out all my data and reset everything, but right now, it is back to working as expected.
