So my 300 PPD is quite low? I am using a pass key as well. Currently the V7 client is reporting that I am getting 400 ppd (2 cores crunching one WU), but I know this to be too high as it usually drops down to 200-250 ppd. 400 is an astonishingly high level of performance for my Core2Duo.

Beyond that, one thing to check is whether your power management is set for maximum performance, otherwise the CPU clock might be running at a reduced rate much of the time to conserve power and generate less heat. The CPU will also be throttled to prevent overheating, so check that the cooling passages are clear of dust and lint and the fans are working well.

I dug up Quadro NVS 160M specs, see http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_nvs ... specs.html.

Judging by those, not folding on it sounds like a good call. It has max 256MB display memory, which is a marginal amount. Also, only 8 stream processors. Even my lowly 1st generation ION iGPU has max 512MB and 16 stream procs. I have managed to fold core_11 WUs after disabling Aero (Vista+ feature) and setting the memory to 256MB in BIOS, but that seemed somewhat flaky, I got mysterious EUEs more often than I cared to see. So, not worth the extra heat inside your laptop and value to FAH is somewhat questionable, even if you persevered with it.

Your CPU, on the other hand, is decent enough laptop dualcore (max 25W TDP, see http://ark.intel.com/products/35568/Int ... SB?q=P8600). Like pointed out earlier, it should fetch about 2000 PPD if nothing is interfering with FAH and you fold 24/7. You may want to check the CPU temperature during folding, though. Core Temp should do that particular job just fine.

As for disabling GPU folding, I'd recommend you to finish whatever you're folding at the moment first and do a clean uninstall (== also remove data directory) of the v7.1.52 client. Latest client is v7.3.6, and it has new features which might be useful to you. IMHO, it would make more sense to give advice on the latest client, presuming you still have a problem disabling GPU folding after a fresh uninstall/install.

Okay with the log information there are some things I can comment on. Your P8600 Core 2 Duo is at least of the same generation as the T8300 in my MacBook, and all things being equal would give about the same PPD. However it has a TDP of 25 W compared to the 35 W for the T8300, that will result in slightly lower performance at maximum utilization.

Another issue is that in older versions of the client there were some bugs in TPF and PPD calculations. I think most of those were fixed up by 7.1.52, but would have to go back through all of the release notes to be sure. Even with the most recent there are known issues of the TPF and PPD figures taking a few percent to settle down, and WU's from some projects will give figures that oscillate around the actual TPF that can be seen by examining the log. But the most recent versions do have more stable estimates of these figures overall than older versions of the V7 client.

Finally, from the information in the log I have your folding username. Looking up the last WU turned in I can see you did better on that for PPD than you think from your estimate of 300 PPD.

Your WU (P8702 R87 C4 G42) was added to the stats database on 2013-07-28 11:03:15 for 639.915 points of credit.

You did get QRB points, and another piece of information was that the elapsed time was 0.71 days. That results in a PPD of 901. So, use the other suggestions on how to stop folding on the GPU and verify the laptop is set for max performance and is not getting throttled because of inadequate cooling and you should see some improvement in the total PPD.

Thanks for all the help. It will take some time to digest all this. I will update the client as time allows. Regarding throttling of the CPU due to temp. Is the activity monitor an accurate gauge of performance? I see it nailed at 100%. Would that be different if throttled down due to higher temps?

CPU hardware throttling is done by slowing the clock. So the activity would still show 100% usage, it is just getting there at a slower rate. You would need to use monitoring software that keeps track of the temperature and clock speed to see if throttling is happening.

If you are folding using both CPU cores and folding 24/7, then you should be getting closer to 2000 PPD. If you only fold a few hours a day, then 300 PPD is not bad. Just make sure you fold enough hours a day to make the deadlines.

I fold 24 x 7 except for the time it takes me to commute to and from work, maybe 1 hour total each day. I've never gotten close to 2000 points per day. I have been folding a single WU since 7/28 and still am not in danger of finishing it yet. Both of my cores are nailed up at 100% with temps around 80C.

Running Core Temp 1.0 RC5 I see my cores are around 80C give or take a few degrees. I see no information with this program on wether or not my CPU has throttled down.

OK, from Core Temp I see an entry called frequency which I believe is my CPU clock. It is VERY low at 0.797 gigahertz. I have a 2.4 ghz Core2Duo so I am not sure why it is reading so low. Even when I shut down folding the frequency remains unchanged.

Anyone have any clue what is going on here?

Be sure to set your power saving settings for maximum performance -- provided your system has enough cooling capacity to deal with the heat generated.

Also be sure that your system is plugged in. The default setting is for FAH to pause when running on battery. [You can change that setting, but only do it if it really makes sense.]

No power saving features engaged and plugged in. I dont know why my computer is throttling down at core temps of only 55 C.
