HD7790 and Project 11292

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

HD7790 and Project 11292

Post by scmo »

Curious to know if anyone had thoughts on slow performance of newly added HD7790. Working on project 11292 WU and currently running at 1,508 PPD and TPF of 21 mins 13 sec. In FAHbench 1.1.2 benchmarking, HD7790 outperformed GTX 650 Ti by 44% in OpenCL single precision Explicit (12.2037 v 8.49785 ns) and 63% in Implicit (70.8036 v 43.4377 ns). Yet, in folding, performance is barely better than an HD6450. Believe AMD driver is v13.4. Log below for reference.

Please note that FAHBench is based upon FahCore_17 and not FahCore_16. FahCore_17 is based upon OpenCL and is currently being beta tested. There are many differences between FahCore_16 and FahCore_17, the main ones are:
1) Uses OpenCL
2) Significantly better performance on AMD GPUs
3) More efficient code base

One option is to wait until FahCore_17 is released to the public.

PantherX, Thanks for the clarification on the cores. Any guess on release date of FAHCore_17?

Probably a couple of months. They had some issues before with the a group of work units and I'm willing to bet that they don't want that to happen again. Due Diligence and what not.

One thing to mention, processing Core 16 WU's is known to work better with the older OpenCL support provided by the 12.8 release of the Catalyst drivers. Some persons have reported success using the older SDK with just the driver from a newer release. But all remnants of the newer SDK need to be removed for that to work. That has been covered in other topics.
