Project 10720 run 0 clone7543 gen 12 running extremely slow

Post by Ed_B »

Hello All:
For some reason project 10720 run 0 clone 7543 gen 12 is running extremely slow, taking 25 minutes to fold each percent. Is this normal or is it a bad WU? I have a fast computer that usually runs WU's 10 times faster than this one.
Thanks Ed

Some projects have considerably longer TPFs than other projects. P10720 appears to be one of those projects. I looked up a previous generation of this project and the donor took 11 days to finish it successfully. Without knowing their machine specs and their folding habits it's difficult to say if that was 'normal' but having long time frames does not necessarily suggest it is a bad WU. If other work units in the same project were experiencing significantly shorter time frames then it might suggest it's bad but that doesn't appear to be the situation in this case.

As a rough estimate of TPF when comparing two different projects, look both of them up on the Projet Summary and compare the "credit." Project 10720 is worth 984.00 baseline points. Look up whatever projects you're mentally comparing it to and I'll bet they earn significantly fewer points for a single WU.

OK Guys thanks for the info my folding rig has a six core exreme intel CPU running at over 4 Ghz and I'm not used to seeing slow WU's. Whats even more troubling is that core Temp shows no more than 51% on any one core and some of the cores show 0%, of course the numbers jump around constantly, but it seems that all six cores would only add up to 100% load at any time that I'm watching it. And that is really weird, usually all six cores are running between 75 and 100%, so it desn't seem right to me.

That additional piece of the puzzle concerning CPU usage is interesting.

Please supply the log including all three sections.

For the actual working part of the log please copy and paste from the download of the WU up to and including the first 10 percentages of work.

OK here's part of my log, the WU I'm working on now and the previous WU.

Okay, didn't realize you were using v6. Sorry for the misleading instructions.

[03:12:23] Mapping NT from 1 to 1

You're running it in uniprocessor mode rather than SMP. You need to stop the current run and add -smp to your startup line.

Ed,

Were you able to add the -smp option to your commandline? Please let us know if you got the desired results.

Also, you may want to consider switching to v7.2.9 after finishing the current WU(s) on v6 using the -oneunit option or the Finish when done option if you're not using the console version. There are many features of v7 that are an improvement over v6 including a separate SMP check box that automatically defaults to using all your computer's cores but does give you the opportunity to use less if you need to set aside a core or two for other functions. I find v7's ability to monitor and modify both my local computer and the other computers on my network especially handy and even if you're only using one computer with a couple of slots (e.g. SMP and GPU) it's so much easier to cleanly pause one because you need the resources for some other task or both for those software updates that require a reboot. Switching is of course not mandatory but I could not go back to v6 now that I've used v7 for a few months and v7 does appear to be the future for folding.

Hello Bollix47:
Yes I did add the line and everything is perking right alon at less than 3 ninutes per percent. I only Fold during the winter because it's just too hot here in Lake Havasu City, Arizona in the summer, 110-120 June trough September, I can't afford the a/c. I downloaded a new FAH Client and I don't know if it's the best one for me? My old one didn't want to run, so I nuked it and found this one, the website has changed since last spring and I had trouble finding the download page. Thank you for the help, I was pretty sure that something wasn't right, when it was going so slow.
Thanks again Ed
