Automatically change max CPU usage laptop?

Post by keesiekaas »

Hello,

I'm wondering if it is possible to automatically reduce the maximum CPU usage
of the client when switching from power from the net to the battery?
I've seen the option to stop the work automatically, but is there any way to just reduce the max usage to say 20%?

thanks in advance

I haven't tried anything like this but with v7 you could create an SMP slot using n-1 cores and a uniprocessor slot for the remaining core. Then add the pause-on battery option just to the SMP slot. I don't see why that wouldn't work.

This sounds like a great enhancement for the V7 but they'd have to fix the %CPU function first. The existing %CPU setting only works for the Uniprocessor client/slot (well, really, it's the unprocessor fahcore that works). I would certainly want to manage a smp slot or a gpu slot in a very different way. If you do run smp on a multi-core CPU, reducing the number of cpu cores allocated as suggested by P5-133XL is a good way to do it.

You can effectively accomplish the same result (lower power consumption/increased battery life) by enabling the SpeedStep that reverts to a lower CPU clock when on battery. That works very well on my T500. If you need the full CPU performance when on battery, you'd be better off to simply Pause the client rather than going all the way down to 20%.
