which is best for my hardware?

Post by BloodshedRomance »

first off, my specs are as follows:

AMD Phenom 2 Quad Core 2.80Ghz
6GB RAM
XFX Radeon HD 6770 (1GDDR5)
Catalyst 11.11 (driver)
Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit

I play recent games on close to max settings or max settings (COD MW3, ACR, Serious Sam 3) so my video card is abused a lot but on down times I would love for it to be used for this program..
which program is best for my setup? I currently am running the base -86X version of Folding@Home.. I tried to get the one for the higher GPUs but it keeps saying that my drivers are to old..
I read somewhere that if a program requests excessive use of CPU then it slows down/stops which is needed for me otherwise I'll manually close it whenever I goto play (which doesn't bother me).. but I would like confirmation that this is true..

Welcome to the forum, BloodshedRomance.

Indeed, you'll need v7 beta client and client-type='advanced' setting to make most of your GPU. That way you'll receive FahCore_16 WUs for AMD GPUs - those run much more efficiently than the previous FahCore_11 WUs which will be deprecated "soon" anyway, see Vijay's blog. Word of warning, though, folding is broken for Catalyst 11.11, see topic.php?f=51&t=20104&start=15. As a gamer, I don't think you'd be willing to roll back to Catalyst 11.10 or 11.9. However, there's a potential workaround which might work for you, viewtopic.php?p=200263#p200263. In any case, if the AMD GPU folding situation seems too messy for you at the moment, you can always contribute with (client v7) CPU/SMP folding only, and wait until the dust settles with the AMD GPU stuff.
