Re: What makes a project a "big one"?
Just a note as Big Wu have historically meant large uploads & download. Fine if you are on an uncapped fibre connection, not so good if you are on a capped 20/30mbit dsl connect or worse

Re: Ice Storm
The US power grid is a national disgrace. Everything is on a pole meaning the weather gets at it all the time, transformers every where, ugly power poles everywhere.....
Where I live there is one transformer for our entire estate of 79 houses and 6 flats and not an exposed power cable in sight.

Re: RTX 3080 vx RX 6900XT vs RTX3090
I'd go for two twin cpu (prob xeon) servers with 4x GPUs on each from what I am seeing There's no need for dual xeon's these days, threadripper or epyc can handle 4 gpu's with ease. My next upgrade will see me reitring my dual xeon machine and replacing it with my current daily driver, a 1920x. I'v...

Re: What's the most suitable GPU for this system?
Thanks for the replies. No crazy projects haha, will just slap a GPU and call it a day. I've heard of the incompatibility but, wasn't it about UEFI? Never heard anything specific to Turing GPU's. The incompatibility has something to do with the fact that more modern (Turing, and perhaps GTX 1600 se...

Re: Dual X5650 giving me 20k PPD, why so slow?
If you haven't already, try linux as the OS. That 20k is low for a pair of x5650's I didn't try, I actually tought windows would be a bit faster. Do you have an estimation on how many more points should I get under Linux? Its been a long time since I ran them but under core A7 they were getting rou...

Re: B450 Chipset overheating with Ryzen 9 3900X + RX5700XT
That Mobo is at the budget end of the range and does not have the greatest cooling solution for its vrm's or chipset. Whilst it can run a 3900x, running at full power for long periods will cause things to overheat. As other have suggested get some additional cooling pointed at the chipset and vrm's ...

Re: What's the most suitable GPU for this system?
Mainboard supports 1 X PCI Express X16 Gen 2.0 slot and CPU 64bit 2 x 2,8Ghz is fast enough for any GPU and 4GB RAM also sufficient. So you could even go with a nvidia RTX 3080 and a new power supply 500watts on 12V. He might not be able to get a 3080 to work on a mobo that old due to Bios support ...

Re: Is the RTX 2070 the best?
If you can hold off a couple of months I would sugget waiting. The new RTX 30xx cards are almost here and there should be a big jump in performance. You could then eiother get 2070's at reduced prices or 3070's and get the higher performance. If you can't wait that long then I would get the 2070's o...

Re: Budget folding build
I have now installed all GPUs and the PPD is quite low for 5 GPUS (between 200k and 400k). I think, as some of you have suggested, the CPU has not enough cores to deal with all GPUs. I will buy a new CPU and I was wondering does Folding@home require physical cores or are threads sufficient? You are...

Re: Ryzen 9 3950x Benchmark Machine: What should I test for
Thanks for all the replies! I can see there are endless possibilities for testing here. One thing I've found is that this is going to be an ongoing adventure, since it takes so long to even get one data set across these 32 threads. Here is part 1, the simplest test: 1-32 cores, just pulling PPD out...

PPD will vary between project and especially if you switch from core 21 to core 22 work.

Re: Cooling Questions
On my cpu rigs its been a mix of stock coolers and lower end tower coolers (hyper 212) but then my cpu's are older server cpus and the stock heatsinks are a lot better then as they have copper base plates. My rarely folded on 1920x daily driver has a big AIO but its too noisy for 24/7 use. For my ne...

Re: Ryzen 9 3900X @ 97C
Eco mode drops the TDP by 1 tier, so your 105w 3950x drops to 95w. It does thi by lowering voltage and clocks if needed.
