Re: Windows 11 is coming soon.

It's more than hearsay when lots of Linux users say it. No good asking Windows users to say why Linux users say it is better. Of course Linux users would say that. Unless you come up with hard numbers, it remains hearsay. If lots of Windows users also say Linux is faster, it gains some credibility,...

Re: Windows 11 is coming soon.

Linux gives higher ppd. I can't comment on how or why (I assume they use the same code) but guess it's because Windows has a lot of processes working in the background. So just hearsay. I'm not a fan of Windows, but this isn't convincing. I don't care about reasons in this case, but I do care about...

Re: Windows 11 is coming soon.

There is a significant difference in ppd between Windows and Linux, so the OS must make a difference. And which one is faster? I find it rather unlikely that there be a significant difference, unless either there is a substantial code difference between Linux and Windows clients (unlikely for the h...

Re: Windows 11 is coming soon.

The operating system has very little influence on hardcore number-crunching tasks such as FAH. Don't expect more than perhaps a few percent from a better SMP scheduler, but probably not really. Scheduling is a computer science problem that has effectively been solved to death and back, and everythin...

Re: Attempt to Treat Covid-19 with EM waves

That's not a research paper. That's a very rough presentation of a wild idea with absolutely no scientific foundation whatsoever. Didn't Trump suggest the same? Using EM radiation (light) to kill the virus inside the body? He was rightly ridiculed for that. Apart from the impracticality of the idea,...

I think this is the most important information for most. Thank you for clarifying that again.

Re: Missing credit server 129.32.209.201

Is it possible that it's the only ones a mac user can get? I remember that in a not so distant past, I had a variety of WUs coming from different projects. Now it's not the case anymore. That seems unlikely. work units are assigned according to availability (which depends on which projects are acti...

Re: Missing credit server 129.32.209.201

For what it's worth, to help with localising the problem, I have not been credited for the following work units (although the collection server gave a credit estimate): Server 129.32.209.201: Project: 16927 (Run 12, Clone 1268, Gen 9) Server 129.32.209.201: Project: 16927 (Run 4, Clone 798, Gen 69) ...

Errors and varying/very low PPD on 16945 (12, 3, 1)

I am noticing a PPD value for this WU of between 1/5 and 1/10 of my usual, and there are a couple of errors in the log: 01:48:11:WU01:FS00:Connecting to assign1.foldingathome.org:80 [...] 01:48:14:WU01:FS00:Received Unit: id:01 state:DOWNLOAD error:NO_ERROR project:16945 run:12 clone:3 gen:1 core:0x...

Re: Why are you folding?

When the pandemic reached Germany with the first substantial wave, all private airfields were effectively closed, and that affected my (private) flying. In the letter announcing the restrictions, the Aeroclub NRW, the umbrella organisation for flying clubs in the Federal State of Northrhine-Westphal...

Re: Unusually low PPD on project 16927?

I also had a few work units cross my path, with an unusually short completion due by time (less than others that I have had before). They are: 16927 (19, 311, 3) 16927 (29, 358, 4) 16927 (28, 444, 4) 16927 (20, 324, 3) 16927 (30, 333, 3) My intent is to let them expire, as I did get a different WU ...

Re: From 18 straight to 9 cores!

Can you show a bit more from your log, so we can see what project this was? I had the same thing, and there are some projects with a maximum number of computing threads, which in these cases seems to be 9. These may be assigned to your machine even if you have advertised 18 cores, when no suitable o...

Re: Unusually low PPD on project 16927?

Have you checked your logs? .. not sure if there is a thread limit on that project .. the log will show if the as/client is running a lower thread count wu .. this can happen if the project has a thread limit and there aren't any WUs that will fully use your kit. There are some variable ppd project...

Unusually low PPD on project 16927?

Hi there, normally I get some variation in PPD from different projects, and that is expected, because not all CPUs are identical, but on my main CPU folding system (dual Xeon X5675) I almost always get between 85,000 and 115,000 PPD. However, Project 16927 consistently gives just around 45,000 PDD, ...
