Re: smp vs gpu2 in terms of scientific benefit

Results are in: After running two hours with 3x8800gt cards on a single core of a E6600 using XP (second core at 0% use) . . . .fahmon says. . . 15,310.18 ppd. No loss, XP's high cpu loading is not effecting the gpu.

Re: smp vs gpu2 in terms of scientific benefit

Not sure if you need the full use of a dedicated cpu core per GPU, but I bet it depends on the power of the gpu and cpu. With some of the GPU's out there delivering in excess of 7,000 ppd, getting an extra 500 ppd for the spliting a cpu core is rather moot. You would be better off getting the maximu...

Re: smp vs gpu2 in terms of scientific benefit

I've chosen to run GPU2 clients only as the GPU PPD is so much greater I want to maximize the CPU's role (XP/E6600 cpu/8800gt x3), however the Vista CPU loading is much lower - you could probably get away with running 1 core of the cpu for several gpus and the other 3 cores for the SMP. I run two 88...

Re: Is GPU2 really that much faster than CPU?

Update: Yesterday I recieved two more 8800gt's from newegg. I added one and after about an hour of driver switches I was able to get a steady 12 hours running 15,000+ ppd/36+ wu per day on a E6600 (dual core, core 2) with three 8800's. I'll be working on adding the fourth this weekend. I was at 100%...

Re: Is GPU2 really that much faster than CPU?

I had good luck with the gpu client. Using a two year old computer with an 2.4ghz dual core, I added a pair of $130 8800GT's, the results where a steady yeild of 10,000 ppd and 22-25 wu/day. I was concerned about the cpu keeping up, but overclocking the cpu up to 3.0ghz resulted in marginal gains, s...
