Re: MacOS GPU

I don't think that market share chart tells the whole story. While I'm sure there are more windows systems out in the world than Mac, many of those windows systems are old, el-cheapo systems in offices that would not be running anything like this. If there were some way to measure OS marketshare fo...

Re: MacOS GPU

This is how I get OpenCL on Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install ocl-icd-libopencl1 sudo apt-get install ocl-icd-opencl-dev Or see these links for Ubuntu setup for FAH: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1091171-howto-linux-folding-rig/ https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=32362 Those seem ...

Thanks. I notice there are some projects like that, but they aren't ones I'm interested in.

Re: MacOS GPU

try GPUGrid ? No, but just taking a look at it now, it doesn't seem to support Mac, or does it? ---------- Oh, also, just thought I'd note that my Ubuntu panel says: "Parallels using AMD Radeon pro 580 opengl engine" So, it does seem to know the right GPU and type, but it is probably gett...

Re: MacOS GPU

If it is an AMD, then it will need OpenCL drivers. For Nvidia, I believe it need OpenCL and CUDA. However, I don't know how to do that via the CLI, only the GUI :( Hopefully, someone else with CLI experience can provide you with some pointers :) I messed with it for about an hour last night, but di...

Re: MacOS GPU

It good to see that Ubuntu can recognize it. Out of curiosity, did you install the proprietary drivers for the GPU: https://itsfoss.com/install-additional-drivers-ubuntu/ It would be nice if you could post the log file here just in case someone knows how to resolve this issue. It doesn't show any '...

Re: MacOS GPU

If you have a eGPU because you need it, give it a try. If you want to buy a eGPU for folding then consider the following: The external case costs similar to a (new) PC usable for folding. For GPU folding you can use low spec HW (except for the GPU) Fair point! And, thanks for pointing that out lest...

Re: MacOS GPU

Have you considered running Ubuntu as a VM and see the eGPU can be functional? That way, it won't cost you another Windows license and you won't have to dual boot. OK, I'll admit that I don't know too much what I'm doing, but I wasn't able to get it to work. Ubuntu seems to just recognize the eGPU ...

Have you considered running Ubuntu as a VM and see the eGPU can be functional? That way, it won't cost you another Windows license and you won't have to dual boot. Hmm, no I hadn't considered that. I wonder what the chances of my eGPU being properly recognized are... maybe worth a try though. Thank...

Re: MacOS GPU

Again, keep in mind eGPUs. That changes everything. But does it actually? Just how common are Mac users with eGPU boxes that can add another $600-1000 dollars to the cost of a system. I don't have any figures, and I suspect you don't either. I know of a few who do this, but have no definitive idea ...

Re: MacOS GPU

1) Folding with a CPU under OS_X produces the same heat and the same points as folding with a CPU under Bootcamp/Windows, right? I haven't compared the two, but I would assume it to be close, unless there are OS-specific, or F@H-specific advantages on one platform or the other. FYI, Bootcamp is bas...

Re: MacOS GPU

The issue as I see it, is that Apple has not wanted this support. ... Now Apple has depreciated OpenCL, preferring Metal. Yeah, I'm a bit unclear what this actually means though. Is it just that Apple isn't going to have it installed? No support? Not allow? etc. A number of 3D-based products are ce...

... MacBooks are now able to use increasingly powerful eGPUs like the 5700XT that can earn over a million points per day. ... This is the main point any decision makers need to consider. While it is quite true that the majority of *stock* Macs couldn't run F@H very well (if at all), almost every mo...

Re: MacOS GPU

... Even if I do just CPU folding, I shudder to think of the damage the heat would do to my laptop. All in all, I've installed it to my pc, 3x 5,1 cMP towers, 2010 27in iMac, and 2013 21in iMac. Again with the iMac's, I had to rethink how much I'd want to use those, and settled on using it on Mediu...
