Re: DeepMind and Protein Folding
Speaking of Vijay, here is his take on AlphaFold: https://a16z.com/2020/12/06/16mins-deep ... ng-ai-bio/ Thanks for this link. As a layman I found it mostly understandable. I think that I now understand the difference between Alpha Fold and FAH: Alpha Fold predicts what a protein will look like aft...

Re: About 2 x GPUs and heat problems
Here's what I did. Put 2 GPUs in a case with a large (220mm I think) side fan. Plus all the normal 120mm fans. Top gpu stays around 72C in a 22-23C room, bottom around 68C. I think air from the side (onto the top of the video card) is important. I had a Meshify case with a 1080TI and 1080 in it. I ...

Re: Help trying to keep temps down
Have you tried running with the case open ? It doesn't look good and dust control is problematic, but it might be worth a shot to see if it helps.

Re: Help explaining to a 12yo
I don't know if I can add anything to this conversation, and I'm not a scientist, but here are some thoughts to what PantherX had to say: For F@H, we simulate the different ways a protein a protein can take to end up in a folded state Understanding the individual steps that a protein goes through al...

Re: Very high CPU temps on medium setting
My 4770 now gets up to 90°C when Folding (clean Noctua NH-D14 cooler), so I don't do that any more. I did some research a while back about commercial services that will delid these things and re-apply better thermal compound. Also a bunch of diy videos where people pulled them apart with razor blad...

Re: Very high CPU temps on medium setting
Yes, the U12S can have a second fan installed on the backside of the fin stack, which I didn't know until recently. I may try that as well. It's an inexpensive thing to try. I would expect it to improve things a lot .... puts more air flow right where it's needed. If that or air flow through the ca...

Re: Very high CPU temps on medium setting
Can you add a second fan to that cooler and run it as push/pull ? I took a quick look at Amazon and it looked like it might be possible ?WussyDan wrote: I have a Noctua U12S 120mm single fan tower on the CPU

Re: Statistics (not the usual...)
It's just that I'm trying to put together a case for gathering those ressources. I'm looking for solid arguments in favor of distributed supercomputing in general and FAH in particular. I think the use case will come after FAH delivers a big win for COVID-19. If that happens, I think that resources...

Re: Statistics (not the usual...)
I'm with OP, but recognize that this sort of thing is in the lowest priority "nice to have" category. I could imagine a speedometer visualization updated hourly showing # of Tera/Exa flops currently being donated. That would be really cool and generate continuing buzz around the project. I...

Linus tech tips just made the server cry by posting a video. more enthusiastic gamers with powerful hardware are now active in the pool. Linus also teased a video that he is going to show how a work server is setup as a learning opportunity and help with the download/upload load on the servers. Tha...

Re: Projects 9000-9040 psummary doesn't list HIV/AIDS/Bryost
I don't think that there are any alzheimer's projects as well. I may be wrong, I couldn't find any others on a cursory review. I think Bryostatin was the only one that was related to that research.

So if this re-occurs we should gather trace route and local IP addresses ? Anything else ?bruce wrote:If something like this happens again, maybe we can gather enough data to learn more about it.

A couple of days ago I posted in the Scientific discussions (Non-FAH) section. I don't remember the specific subject, but I think it was something like "Bacteria and Brain diseases". In it I described an article that I encountered discussing L-Serine as a mechanism for slowing down neuro-d...

Bacteria and Neuro-degenerative Brain Diseases
I just came across an article that I really liked. It describes a possible cause and treatment for various neuro-degnerative. The theory is that a toxin (BMAA) associated with cyanobacteria causes damage to the brain. The belief is that BMAA insinuates "... itself into protein chains in place o...
