Re: Recent Boost in F@H Output?

The cause-and-effect conclusions are always a bit fuzzy, but compare the stats for the CureCoin team with the totals and draw your own conclusions. Curecoin PPD: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... =&t=224497 Could be coincidence, but I suspect that there's a correlation/causation. No w...

Re: Port Client to Android

This idea has been mentioned previously. The main reasons given have been that phones, and the like, have a very limited calculation capability. Folding needs its answers quickly, and phones just couldn't compete with PC's. That being said, it is much more likely in the future with the advent of th...

Re: "Hover ads" in F@H Forum

It sounds very much like certain types of adware/malware I've seen. First I'd check to make sure there aren't any extensions installed in IE that you didn't know about, and then I'd run a scan with microsoft security essentials or whatever other anti-virus/malware tool you have at your disposal. If ...

Re: Any Affects of Gene Patent on F@H?

I don't think so, it only patents the genes directly related to that, I'd think that a patent wouldn't cover protein folding at all.

Both of them use cedar cores, so that may be part of the issue.

Re: Possible cure for cancer found at Stanford?

I don't think it had anything to do with this discovery. I'd also like to point out the sensationalism going on in the media here, I don't think this is a "holy grail" for cancer, or a full blown cure. It still has a long way to go before it can be used in humans, but it has shown promisin...

I am curious exactly what causes this magnitude of a speedup. Whatever it is though, good on everyone involved with OpenMM there!

Re: Nine new papers out; three exceptionally impressive

The information we were given several years ago was that SLI/Xfire links are too slow for FAH, though I've never seen an explanation of how moving data via SLI/XFire compares with PCIe data transfers. Since the FahCores have been designed to preparing work packets in CPU-RAM which can be processed ...

Re: Nine new papers out; three exceptionally impressive

Latency is a big factor, but it can also be bandwidth. With a slow GPU, the I/O between main RAM and VRAM can be easily be overlapped with computing. With a fast GPU, it's a lot harder to feed it enough data to keep it busy. (That's oversimplified, but still true.) Can the SLI or xFire link be used...

Re: The brain, how does it work? [URL]

I am wondering how exactly they will define their goal. The human genome project, it seems, had it a bit easier by comparison, since its pretty easy to define how to map a gene. How do you really map a human brain though?

Re: Dr. Pande Might Consider Giving a "TED" Talk

Well, I think there's a distinction to be made here between full TED conferences and TEDx conferences. Full TED conferences are put on by TED themselves, and tend to be much rarer, happen much less often, etc. However, TEDx confrences can be put on by pretty much anyone, anywhere, so it might be goo...

Re: New Landing Page - Networked Computers?

The other issue is people who change names, I know a few teams that have probably 10x as many users as actual folders, and that's not dealing with the people who have stopped folding anymore, or other reasons for the number of computers to drop off.

Re: Nine new papers out; three exceptionally impressive

The real interesting thing here seems to be the use of multiple GPUs. The loss of scaling at four GPUs doesn't sound like that much of a deal, especially since someone with four GPUs could always do two separate calculations using 2 GPUs each if it is more efficient. Further, I wonder what the main ...

Re: Future of F@H: folding speed and protein size

Computing can be fast, but majority of time is being wasted by sending bits between various chips within the system and outside of it. More improvements are needed for interconnections. Maybe it will prove fruitful: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/research/intel-labs-optical-interconnect-in-...
